“This is going to sound weird,” Janssen said. “But (my favorite gift is) a desk lamp. “When I was younger, my parents didn’t have a lot of money, and my one gift that year was a simple desk lamp,” he said. “I shared a room with my two brothers, and this allowed me to read books and work on projects after my brothers had gone to sleep. So many great adventures (in books) and cool ideas were drawn out under that desk lamp. The one thing central Wisconsin folks consistently said when asked about their best gifts ever was that, like Janssen’s, they all hold special meaning in their hearts. “Like many families in 1988, ours was struggling,” recalls Ann Kluck of Stevens Point. “I was 8 years old and very aware of the financial tension in our home. we had no health insurance and from my 8-year-old perspective, most devastating of all, we had no Christmas tree. “It was the 19 of December and our living room was bare of a tree, the trimmings and wrapped gifts to pique our childhood curiosities. Homes ready for tour - Fort Scott Tribune

This marks the 35th year for the Homes for the Holidays tour, sponsored by the Historic Preservation Association (HPA) of Bourbon County, Inc. The Moonlight and Mistletoe home owners will host with beverages and a light buffet from 6:30 to 8:30 p. m. Friday at 102 S. National Ave. Tickets may be purchased at the Country Cupboard and the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce by Tuesday and this event is limited to 100 guests. The ticket for Moonlight and Mistletoe also includes admission to Saturday and Sunday's tour events. 6 the homes available for touring are: the Chikly's at 816 S. Crawford St. Sally Richardson at 924 S. National Ave. and Joyce Gobl at 2125 S. Holbrook St. Homes will be open for tours from 11 a. m. to 5 p. m. On Sunday, Dec. 7, the three homes may be toured from noon until 4 p. m. The weekend tour events are a fundraiser for the HPA. The objective of the organization is to save historic buildings in Fort Scott and the surrounding areas, and depends on contributions and donations of time and talent to accomplish its goals, according to information provided by the HPA.
